In the aluminum extrusion industry, commissioning a new line is always a milestone. But some projects carry more technical weight than others.

YPL1500 Double-Action Extrusion Press (At Customer Site)

Recently, an HLT double-action extrusion line completed installation and commissioning at a customer site and has officially entered production. The setup consists of a 1500-ton YPL1500 double-action extrusion press, paired with an online quenching system and a puller.

This project is notable not just because it is running, but because of what it is running. Double-action presses address a specific set of manufacturing challenges that standard single-action machines cannot easily solve. Here is a closer look at the engineering logic behind this project.

The Core Difference: Seamless vs. Welded Profiles

To understand why this line matters, it helps to look at how hollow profiles are made.

In conventional single-action extrusion, hollow profiles are typically formed using a porthole or bridge die. The metal splits, flows around a mandrel, and re-welds itself before exiting the die. This is an efficient process, but it leaves a longitudinal weld seam in the final product. For standard architectural and industrial profiles, this seam is perfectly acceptable.

However, when the end-use requires absolute structural integrity, that seam becomes a limitation. A double-action press solves this by introducing an independent piercing system. The mandrel pierces the billet directly, and the metal flows around it seamlessly. There is no splitting and no re-welding. The result is a truly seamless hollow profile.

So, when does a manufacturer actually need this configuration? A double-action press is typically the right choice in the following scenarios:

  • High-Pressure Fluid and Structural Tubes: When the product must withstand internal pressure, bending fatigue, or extreme loads, the absence of a weld line ensures reliable structural integrity.

  • Strict Concentricity Demands: When hollow profiles must maintain highly uniform wall thickness around the entire perimeter without any thick welded zones.

  • Demanding Sectors: For industries like aerospace, new energy vehicles, and high-end rail transit, where the mechanical properties of seamless sections are non-negotiable.

  • Flexible Production Needs: Modern double-action presses can also switch to solid profiles or bars by bypassing the mandrel, allowing one machine to serve a broader product mix.

For manufacturers evaluating this technology, hardware configuration dictates real-world performance. The YPL1500 deployed at this customer site features several engineering details designed specifically for precision and reliability:

1️⃣ Fully Automatic Operation & Predictive Maintenance
The line is designed to reduce reliance on manual intervention. It runs automatically with the Smart Control V2.0 system. Beyond basic automation, the system continuously analyzes real-time data and operational trends. This enables predictive maintenance, allowing operators to address potential issues before they cause unexpected downtime.

2️⃣ Automatic Hydraulic Piercing Mandrel System
This is a defining feature of the press. The system operates without consuming extrusion force, ensuring that the full 1500-ton capacity is dedicated to moving metal. The system provides real-time monitoring and control of the mandrel force, which prevents piercing pin damage during demanding cycles.

3️⃣ Shorter Frame, Better Rigidity
In traditional double-action designs, the piercing mechanism often requires a heavy crosshead or piercing platen behind the main cylinder, which lengthens the machine. The YPL1500 utilizes a hydraulic mandrel system that eliminates the need for this extra platen. As a result, the press frame is significantly shorter. Combined with a highly compact tie-rod center distance and X-FRAME prestressed structure, the shorter frame minimizes elastic deformation under high pressure, ensuring stable extrusion.

4️⃣ ±0.5mm Mandrel Precision
Ultimately, the quality of a seamless profile depends on the internal surface. The YPL1500 achieves a high positioning accuracy of ±0.5mm. This precision guarantees an excellent inner wall smoothness for seamless profiles, meeting the strict requirements of demanding industries.

The Line Behind the Press: Quenching and Pulling

A press does not operate in isolation. The way the equipment downstream of the die performs determines whether the profile retains its intended properties.

Online Quenching System &  Puller (At Customer Site)

The project includes an online quenching system and a puller. For seamless tubes and hollow sections, cooling must begin immediately and uniformly after the metal leaves the die to lock in the temper. The online quenching system handles this without intermediate handling.

Immediately following the quench, the puller takes control. For long, thin-walled profiles, maintaining consistent tension is critical to prevent sagging or bowing. The puller ensures the profile stays straight as it moves down the run-out table.

When the press, the quenching system, and the puller are engineered to operate as a unified line, commissioning is more straightforward. The timing and tension parameters can be tuned collaboratively from day one.

Flexible Equipment Solutions: From Complete Lines to Standalone Units

While this project demonstrates the power of a fully integrated line, we understand that every manufacturer has unique investment strategies and production layouts.
